Our defense strategy of Rebuilding the Military relies directly upon the capability, capacity and resilience of our defense industrial base (DIB), which has experienced fragility brought about by economic, technological, supply and policy challenges. This panel will discuss these challenges and the current initiatives enabling advanced manufacturing technologies to restore our DIB to be an arsenal of freedom. Topics include pillars from the National Defense Industrial Strategy, investments across USW(R&E) and USW(A&S), illuminating and securing the defense supply chain and managing the global economic competition environment.

1:35 PM PANEL: Advanced Manufacturing to Meet the Warfighter’s Needs (Restoring the Warrior Ethos)

The US has long relied on technological superiority to ensure warfighter preeminence in battle. The number of advanced weapon systems under development and the speed at which they must be delivered are increasing while the advanced technologies being incorporated into weapon system design and manufacturing are maturing at a stunning pace. The recent Acquisition Transformation Strategy substantially revises the pathways for manufacturing and technology adoption and the Department’s commercial-first strategy requires advanced manufacturing to meet scale-up production targets. This panel will focus on how industry and government can best work together to navigate these demands and opportunities to ensure the warfighter has the most advanced and cost-effective weapon systems available.

Moderator: Col John Beatty, Deputy Commander, Air Force Technical Applications Center, Patrick Space Force Base
  • Ms. Amanda Gentry, Director, Air Force Material Command Integrated Development Office
  • Mr. Steve Fournier, Additive Manufacturing Manager, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems

3:30 PM PANEL: From Mill to Missile: Advanced Manufacturing for Munitions

Numerous global events have shown the criticality of maintaining a reliable and robust US supply chain for munitions production. From conventional munitions to hypersonic weapons, US industrial capability covers a wide waterfront of traditional manufacturing such as casting and forging of metal, to advanced high temperature processing of ceramic matrix composites, and biomanufacturing of energetics. Based upon lessons from the Ukraine conflict, required production rates must be elastic and capable of surge over weeks and months, not years. This panel will discuss the economic, technological, and policy challenges and opportunities before the defense industrial base in maintaining and growing a capability US production capability.

Moderator: Mr. Tony Garcia, Director of Munitions Technologies, Office of the Under Secretary of War for Research & Engineering
  • Mr. Cody Johnson, Explosives Industrial Base Branch, US Army DEVCOM Armaments Center, FCDD-ACM-EJ
